Exercise Doesn't Work...

...If your "3" is really a "6"

Wanna Heal?  don't be So TOUGH...

"No Pain, No Gain."

This was the mantra of '80s and '90s gym culture, thanks in no small part to the influence of bodybuilding and hypermasculine action movies.

Close, Arnie, but not quite.

The main result has been multiple generations of gym-goers sacrificing their joints on the altar of building muscle, as if it's supposed to be a tradeoff.

Today exercise science has a more nuanced view towards pain and its role in strength training, especially the rehabilitation of joint tissues - tendon, ligaments, meniscus, etc.

As it turns out, some pain is necessary to trigger adaptation - but only certain kinds, and only up to a point.

Past that point, you risk injury.

But just beneath that point, you can adapt and become more resilient.

In our programs, clients are taught to do this first by distinguishing between pain and fatigue.

Fatigue is the onset of muscle tiredness - a "burning" sensation that signals you're reaching the end of your stamina in a particular exercise.

Pain, on the other hand, is a signal indicating the joint can't support more load/stress safely.  This is typically felt as a sharp sensation, or as excessive tension/pressure.

Once the client understands this, then they need only keep their pain and fatigue within certain limits to successfully guide an exercise towards a joint repair effect.

With fatigue that limit is 7/10, meaning tired, but not exhausted.

With pain, that limit is 3/10, meaning present, but faint.

You see the problem, right?

By the time they even consider doing joint repair, most people (myself included) have built up such a high 'pain tolerance' that it skews their perspective.

What they think is 3/10 pain is actually closer to 6 or above, causing them to do the right things but in the wrong amount.

Once we can get them to back up, quit being so tough, and learn to operate at a more accurate 3/10 pain level, that's when their joint repairs take off.

In summary, it isn't "No Pain No Gain."

It's "Some Pain With Moderate Fatigue = HEALTHY Gains"

Sure, it won't sell many posters.

But it works.

YOU'RE NOT BROKEN.  YOU JUST NEED TO MOVE BETTER.
