Now wave goodbye!
One reason people get frustrated trying to heal their joint pain is they don't know how to tell if it's working.
In other words, they can't measure it.
But strength coaches can.
We're trained to look at joint recovery through the lens of gain of function.
To measure this, we put athletes through active range of motion testing.
This lets us see where their pain/limitation starts.
From there we retest them every few weeks to make sure their program is working.
If it is, we can see it by an increase in their active range of motion before triggering pain again:
This is important because pain will persist even as you get stronger, which can fool you into thinking you're not healing.
That's why gain of function is the ultimate measurement.
Pain comes and goes, but if you're moving better, you're healing. Period.
Do you need to be a strength coach to measure this for yourself?
No. You just need to be able to tell if things are getting easier to do, despite the pain.
It's not rocket science, but it does require daily practice and genuine curiosity about your own movement.
Are you curious?
