Time to upgrade your pain vocabulary to heal with more precision!
Today's word is mechanoreceptor:
"A sense organ or cell that responds to mechanical stimuli such as touch, pressure, temperature, or sound."
Our body is covered in mechanoreceptors, from the surface of the skin all the way down to the bone.
In a very literal sense, they ARE how we experience physical reality.
How does this relate to joint repair?
In a word: volume.
Mechanoreceptors are like little volume dials that can alert us to an EXCESSIVE amount of stimulus, and instantly alter our behavior to match.
For example, if you scream in my ear the mechanoreceptors processing sound will overload and send a threat signal to the rest of my body, causing me to flinch and pull away.
But if you whisper in my ear the mechanoreceptors will function normally, and I'll lean in to listen to what you have to say.
Joints work the same.
When loaded properly, their mechanoreceptors "approve" the loading stimulus and signal the body to adapt, inducing the tissues around the joint to become stronger.
Understand?
That's why "I can't do XYZ because it hurts" is exactly the wrong attitude if you're ever going to heal joint pain long term.
It denies the reality of how the body uses pain to heal itself.
Reread that sentence.
If you understand that no movement is "good or bad" but simply "adaptable or not adaptable", you can use the miracle of mechanoreception to restore abilities you thought were gone forever.
It's all about getting the volume right...
You're not broken. You just need to MOVE BETTER.
